- “At age 40 my doctor told me that I had to lose weight or I wasn't likely to make it to age 50. I weighed an estimated 425pounds (the doctor’s scale only went up to 300) so he told me my options were to get a gastric bypass operation or begin an exercise program. Since I knew that gastric bypass operations were risky (and occasionally fatal!). So I decided to try to begin a walking program. But after just 15 minutes of walking my legs were killing me and I was nearly breathless. Then I happened to see someone walking with Tom’s poles and after hearing how they worked I decided to try them. I could immediately walk 20 minutes without the pain and severe panting. I soon worked up to being able to walk 2 miles and committed to do so 5 days a week. On weekends I took Tom’s advice for maximizing calorie burn and walked between 5 and 6 miles each day.To avoid the stares and comments from people, I did most of my walking in the cemetery which gave me some extra incentive. My parent had bought me a plot and a headstone with my name and date of birth was already placed on it. Every time I walked by, it motivated me to keep walking. In about 24 months, even my doctor was amazed that I’d lost around 200 pounds. I did a little ceremony in the cemetery where I imagined burying the unhealthy half of me, and then walked out of the cemetery that day excited to begin a new and much healthier life. I’d still like to shed a few more pounds, but I know that my life is forever changed and that I’m now very likely going to live a normal life span and enjoy each year more than I ever could have had the Exerstriders not helped me become half the person I once was.
